The goal of this webinar is for you to experience a paradigm shift. A paradigm shift occurs when a normal and customary way of seeing and doing something is replaced by a new and different way. Understanding muscle activation will give you the potential for a new perspective on active and passive range of motion, stretching, strengthening, flexibility, stability, muscle function, biomechanics, and human movement. Muscle activation may be a tool to advance patient progress even though you feel they reached a plateau.

Many clinicians are unable to define muscle activation, let alone comprehend how powerful and valuable it is in understanding normal muscle function. This webinar defines muscle activation based on neuromuscular anatomy. A brief discussion of the history of muscle activation and procedures used to quantify it will render a better understanding of the research literature that includes this term. Ample pictures, diagrams, and videos incorporated throughout the webinar will enhance the learning experience.

You will learn techniques to assess for loss of muscle activation (inhibition) and interventions available to restore muscle function. A plethora of clinical case presentations will ingrain the neuromuscular anatomy in your memory, allow you to make clinical correlations, and help visualize using the technique. Videos of muscle activation assessment and treatment are included in the webinar, accompanied with a handout describing the sequence in each video, so you can immediately begin practicing muscle activation.

This is an introductory level course.

  • SHARON HOLLIS, PT, DPT, CHT, OCS

Dr. Hollis has been a practicing clinician for over 25 years. Early in her career, she specialized in hand and upper extremity rehabilitation and became a Certified Hand Therapist. She did not want to limit her skills and talent to the upper extremity, so she branched out to pursue orthopaedic and sports medicine rehabilitation. In support of her commitment to excellence, she recently became a Board-Certified Specialist in Orthopaedic Physical Therapy. Dr. Hollis has a passion for knowledge and learning and looks outside the box for answers to persistent questions. This relentless pursuit led her to studying the science of muscle activation. Adding this new perspective of muscle function to her extensive list of manual skills and knowledge of biomechanics, resulted in personal and patient outcomes she had not previously experienced.

Dr. Hollis will not hesitate to acknowledge that learning and implementing muscle activation transformed her life, her skills, her patient outcomes, and her career. She recently published a case report on muscle activation in the Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy. She continues to pursue clinical research on muscle activation while managing a caseload and clinical instruction for PTA and DPT students.
